Week 10

Inquiry Activity

Airbnb, welcome home, viewed 24th September 2015: https://www.airbnb.com.au/

The website I have chosen is Airbnb, I recently had to do a presentation on Airbnb for another course and when research found their website very interesting. This is mainly due to their photo's and graphics used to grab the audience. Airbnb is a website that helps people find affordable accommodation all around the world. People called hosts rent out their properties to people on the website for money, this can be anywhere around the world for amazing prices. This is Airbnb's logo:

As you can see their logo is pink and their is a reason behind this. Pink represents friendship, affection, harmony and approach-ability. These are all qualities Airbnb need to have within their organisation.

They also have a trademark which is "Welcome Home".

Airbnb is a effective website it makes the user want to keep exploring with all the beautiful photo's. Airbnb is a great organisation and has made it easy for people to travel the world.

Practical Activity

The checklist has been completed and I have used the feedback from student to improve my blog. I have found this assignment interesting, to start with I thought it was just going to be a annoying assignment that will take up all my time.

However after a few weeks I really started enjoying myself and found out how to design and change my blog. Throughout this assignment I believe I have improved in my writing and have learnt many new skills. At the end of this course I hope I have gain immense knowledge to help me with my future career.

I am not that great with technology, but after playing around and reviewing other peoples blog I am proud of what I have achieved with this assignment.

Technical Activity

The checklist made me go through and check three major areas throughout my blog:

  • Did I capitalise all my I's and I'ms I'ds
  • Do I need a semi colon before my however's
  • The last one was the length of my sentences

Week 9

Week 9

Inquiry Activity

 Gold Standard Hotel

Conde Nast Traveller, Gold Standard Traveller, Gold Standard Hotels 2015, viewed 24th September 2015:

25 Best Hotels

TripAdvisor, Top 25 Hotels- World, viewed 24th September 2015:

Both these sites showcase beautiful hotels of the world, however they are different. The Traveler website only show gold standard five start resort hotels where as TripAdvisor shows all hotels no matter what star they are. The Travelers website had a high class layout with fancy font making it feel old glamour and expensive. Whereas the TripAdvisor website was basic and had a click through slide of the 25 hotels with photos and information.

Both websites had a hotel in the Maldives as their number one hotel to visit. They both target travelers and tourist who want to see the world.

Practical Activity

The Storify I reviewed:

Who do you think is the audience?

People interested in fashion and supporting a great charity.

What did you learn about the event?

I learnt that it is a luncheon held in Caloundra with a spring carnival fashion show. It is an annual event where large companies such as Myer, Dorothy the label and Nicola Finetti. These companies all come together to support the wishlist charity.

What else could be included that would make the story more interesting or have more impact?
  • I want to know more about what happened throughout the day
  • What food did they have ? You mention the food taste great, what was it?
  • How the fashion show actually supports the charity?
  • What is the charity and why do they need to be supported?
  • How many years have they been doing the event?

What do you like about the story?

The story is great I think if you add these idea's it will make it more interesting and help it flow better. You had great use of quotes from people throughout the day and you used twitter throughout the event constantly. This is a great base for your story cannot wait to see the finished product.

Technical Activity- Active and Passive Writing Quiz

I found this quiz interesting, I struggled with two question 7 and 8 however was on the right track for the others which surprised me. I was expecting it to be a lot more difficult however I did not struggle as much as I thought I would.

Week 8

Week 8

Inquiry Activity

So personally I use Instagram to follow celebrities and stay update on the celebrity gossip. I also use Instagram to share photos of my life with my followers.

However in an organisational perspective Instagram could help them out too. My friend has a small business and she uses Instagram to show case her new products for clients and what is happening in the business.

https://instagram.com/thelittlethingsjewellery/

Though on a larger scale many large organisation also have Instagram accounts that allow them to share images of what is happening in the organisations. It is mostly used to advertise events and charity work, it all helps the organisations bet their across image to their consumer.

Practical Activity

It is all about how many followers you have on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in today's world. Instagram is a social media network that allows celebrities and anyone to share pictures of their life with their followers.

Instagram is a great way to stay update with many celebrities and what they do in their life. It also allows organisations to share photos and have a personal connection with their consumers.

It also gives a network for small businesses online to start-up their business. It is a forum that allows people to share inspiring quotes and photography. However many see it as a way to stork celebrities and find out what Kim Kardashian had for breakfast, it is seen as a free marketing tool for large organisations, for example the ANZ national bank.

ANZ have a Instagram account where they can share videos and photos of their new products and advertisements. It is a network for many, with many reasons for use. Most people use it to share photos, others use it for business reasons, some use it to share videos, some use it to connect with fans, some use it to share their music and most people use it just for their filters and a free photo editor tool to make their photo's seem professional.

Instagram allows all uses to feel like photographers and it sure can make us all look like professional photographers. Instagram allows you to select a photo and you can crop, edit and add filters until you are pleased with the outcome. It can transform anyone into a professional photographer.

Overall  Instagram is a social network that allows everyone to share their life with who they choose. It allows everyone to become inspired by photography and can even make people famous. Instagram is a great social network to interact with people and can even be used as a marketing tool for large and small organisations.

Technical Activity - Quiz 8

I think I did really well this week finally getting the hang of the quizzes. I tried my best and only took three attempts to get my 100% i surprised myself.

Week 7

Week 7

Practical Activity

I found this activity very useful and will be using for all my future assignments. On all my feedback from my assignments I all ways receive low marks due to punctuation and grammar. I picked up a few grammar and punctuation mistakes however there is probably more than I picked up. I read it through out loud however from the results I received from assignment 1 I could have done a better job. This check list is a great idea and the content I am learning in this course will help me improve my writing skills for future assignments and for my future career.

Inquiry Activity

i) Stories that are found in the Crocodile Specialist Group Newsletter are all reports from different countries, and how they are dealing with crocodiles and what they are doing in the crocodile field. Then there are articles about new book releases related to crocodiles. Other articles in the newsletter are events that have taken place and what is happening in the science field of crocodiles.

ii) This newsletter is targeted at crocodile enthusiasts, so by having the latest published articles and articles about whats happening with crocodiles around the world.

iii)  Recent research suggests that long-legged wading birds actively choose nesting sites above American alligators (Alligator Mississippians), presumably to take advantage of the protection from mammalian nest predators that alligator presence offers. This is the article I personally would investigate more as it is the most appealing. Understanding why certain species would nest near crocodiles and while crocodiles would nest near certain species really fascinates me and would make for a interesting paper.

iv)  I believe this newsletter would be super effective with their targeted audience, it covers many interesting information about crocodiles and great new findings in the science field.
I found it quite interesting and I am not even passionate about crocodiles. However the way the science article section is written it could be changed to suit average people not so scientific and academically written.

Technical Activity

For part A of the quiz this week I really surprised myself, I got 5/10 on my first attempt. Which I thought I would struggle with because I am not really that great with spelling however it only took my three attempts which I was happy with. Part B I really struggled with but only took my three attempts too. I was really happy with how I approached this weeks quizzes I read the questions more carefully and tried my best.

Week 6

Week 6

Practical Activity

Below  is the link to my Storify account where you can see my photo essay. It is of a day in the life of my 2 year old puppy Rocco.

Inquiry Activity

Cirque Du Soleil, Ovo, viewed 23rd September 2015: https://static01.cirquedusoleil.com/en/~/media/press/PDF/ovo/OVO_PressKit.pdf

OVO

These are the elements that I would use to compile a story about what the show is about and who created it.

  • OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.
  • The name OVO means “egg” in Portuguese. This timeless symbol of the life cycle and birth of numerous insects represents the underlying thread of the show.
  • Guy Laliberté was born in Quebec City in 1959. Guy Laliberté was the first to orchestrate the marriage of cultures and artistic and acrobatic disciplines that is the hallmark of Cirque du Soleil. Since 1984, he has guided the creative team through the creation of every show and contributed to elevating the circus arts to the level of the great artistic disciplines.
  • Université Laval (Québec) awarded an honorary doctorate to Guy Laliberté in 2008. The year before, Guy Laliberté took the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for all three levels: Quebec, Canada and International. In 2004, he received the Order of Canada, the highest distinction in the country, from the Governor General of Canada. The same year, he was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2003, he was honored by the Condé Nast group as part of the Never Follow Program, a tribute to creators and innovators. In 2001, he was named a Great Montrealer by the Académie des Grands Montréalais. In 1997, Guy Laliberté received the Ordre national du Québec, the highest distinction awarded by the Government of Quebec.
  •  OVO first premiered in Montréal in April 2009 and since then has visited more than 20 cities in 4 different countries.
  •  OVO is the 25th Cirque du Soleil live production created on the company’s 25th anniversary.
  •  OVO celebrated its 1300th show in December 2012 in Adelaide, South Australia.
  •  Deborah Colker is the first female director at Cirque du Soleil.
  •  As with all Cirque du Soleil productions, no animals perform in OVO.
  • The cast and crew of OVO is an international one, representing 22 nationalities (cast represent 15): Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States.
  • Approximately 200 people travel with the tour including more than 125 employees and the rest are official accompanying members (spouses and children). Of all the employees, 54 are performers.
  • The mission of Cirque du Soleil is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world.
  •  In 1984, 73 people worked for Cirque du Soleil. Today, the business has 5,000 employees worldwide, including more than 1,300 artists.
  •  At the Montréal International Headquarters alone, there are close to 2,000 employees.
  •  More than 100 types of occupations can be found at Cirque.
  •  The company’s employees and artists represent close to 50 nationalities and speak 25 different languages.
  •  More than 100 million spectators have seen a Cirque du Soleil show since 1984.
  •  Close to 15 million people will see a Cirque du Soleil show in 2013.
  •  Cirque du Soleil hasn’t received any grants from the public or private sectors since 1992.

Technical Activity Week 6 Quiz

Week 6 quiz A I really struggled with however I was pleasantry surprised on how well I did on week 6 quiz B I got 7/10 on my first attempt.

Week 5

Week 5

Practical Activity - Short News Story

My mother has worked in banking all her life, since the age of 15 she has worked in a bank, you could say it's her passion. She loves the banking environment and truly I couldn't see her working anywhere else. My mother may seem like a normal person however she is my hero. In her early years she was the youngest representative from Coonanbarabran to ever be selected for state netball. She had a part time job at the local Shell Service Station. Where she met a young man, who would eventually turn out to be her soul mate.

That's right my mother got to marry her first love and they have been together now for almost 30 years. My mother's most important thing in her life is family. In 2000 my mum decided that Coonanbarabran had no opportunity for our family to grow, She then moved us from NSW to Central Queensland, to a town called Biloela.

At Biloela we had no family for support it was just my parents, my sister and me. This is what makes my mother and father so strong, they moved 14 hours away from their family so their daughters could have a better opportunity then they did at life.

However we didn't stay at Biloela long, after two years we then moved to Rockhampton were my mother was offered another position within the bank. We didn't stay in Rockhampton long either, after a year my mother received a management position in Gladstone were we lived for 14 years before we moved to Mackay in 2015.

My mum always says "If we never left Coona then you girls wouldn't have had the opportunities you have been given, Hannah you would never have achieved what you did in golf and you probably would never have gone to university".

My Father has one passion in life and that is family, it also happens to be the most important thing to him as well. My Father would do anything for us, he worked 14 hours days, six days a week in Gladstone to support our family especially my younger sister and myself.

He would do it without complaint, he is a hard worker and a proud man. However he is my strongest supporter, always there throughout my golfing career and the first one I go to for help.

I played golf for 13 years and every tournament or weekend he was their supporting and cheering me on. He was my catty and always said " When you go professional you better not sack me".

My father was a stay at home dad when we moved to Biloela. Day care was to expensive so my father decided to stay home with my sister and me. He looked after a 18 month old baby and a 4 year old girl every day. Not many men can say they have done that.

My parents are my hero's and my strongest supporters. I will never forget what they have done and the sacrifices they have made for me. So I could be where I am today.

Inquiry Activity

News.com.au, Hungarian police tear gas children in bid to keep migrants out, viewed 17th September 2015: http://www.news.com.au/world/hungarian-police-tear-gas-children-in-bid-to-keep-migrants-out/story-fndir2ev-1227530995930

This article impacted with the video evidence of the Hungarian police tear gassing small children and families of the those immigrating from Syria.

“I witnessed hundreds of exhausted men, women and children being told they would not be allowed to travel through Hungary and onto Western Europe, a route used nearly 200,000 migrants already this year" said a witness.

Police fired at least 20 tear gas grenades as the crowd chanted slogans in Arabic with their fists in the air.
Children were crying from the effects of the tear gas, which causes respiratory problems as well as eye irritation. Several ambulances arrived at the scene
These extracts from the article and the video evidence from the reporters has made this a horrific attack on people who are just seeking refuge.
This article plays on the heart strings of all readers, these children and families are trying to find refuge in other countries while their country gets demolished by war.

Technical Activity - Week 5 A and B Quiz

They both took about three to four attempts I really struggled this weeks with the content. However I think I just need to ready the content and questions more carefully. I still tried my best and think I need to read the content more thoroughly.

Week 4

Week 4

Practical Plan for Assignment 3

So the event I have chosen to attend is the Sugar City Con, this is mainly due to the price of tickets at the moment I am struggling for money as I have recently moved and have no job. I also found this event more appealing with international guest like comic book artists and voice actors from some of my favourite  tv shows.I have only recently moved to the area and also know where the Mackay Showgrounds are compared to the Virgin Australia Stadium I don't know where that is. Sugar City Con has more events to cover throughout the two days compared to the Bull Riding Blow Out. Sugar city con has a zombie fun run, anime screening, jumping castle for kids, cosplay competition, vintage comic books for sale and heaps more. I personal believe that the Sugar City Con has more to make for a great story than the Bull Riding Blow Out.

Quotes from people that I wish to get from people would be the host of the event, winners of the cosplay (people who dress up in costume) competition and just general feedback from the public attendees.

After watching the 'Why you Should Plan video' the three key points I took from that video was establish the main events you want to cover, find a schedule and finally get accreditation if needed. However even with these key points and planing know that you will need to adapt to what happens on the day.

Inquiry Activity

The Sydney morning Herald Entertainment, Rob Pattinson talks about his new film, The Rover with Dave O'Neil, viewed 16th September 2015: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/robert-pattinson-talksabout-his-new-film-the-rover-withdave-oneil-20140619-zs99j.html

a)  This article was horrible the title was boring, it did not grab my attention or make me want to read it and it did not give an inside into what the story was going to be about. There was no formal language used it was way to laid back and to casual it was like somebody telling a story about their weekend to a friend. The author tried to be funny and use comedy through the article but I did not find it funny. The main reason this article is poorly written is does not discuss the movie as the title of the article suggests.

AGForce, Drought worst in living memory: AgForce survey, viewed 16th September 2015: http://www.agforceqld.org.au/index.php?tgtPage=news&id=view,478

b) This media release was great it had everything a media release should have. It uses quotes from the General President of Agforce and uses factual information from the survey. It begins and ends correctly and has a contact number at the end for further enquirers.

Technical activity - Quiz Results

I struggled with the quiz this week, I am not the best when it comes to Grammar and Punctuation. I should have read the chapter more thoroughly. It took me four attempts to get 100%  on this weeks quiz however my second and third attempts where both 90%. I need to read the chapter and take notes so when I do the quizzes it will help jot my memory.
